DISTRIBUTION: Northern California to southern Alaska, and eastward through British Columbia to northern Montana. Biggest specimens exist on Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Red Cedar has a reddish or violet-brown heartwood with yellow sapwood that can appear in streaks and stripes within the heartwood. Red Cedar is commonly used in closets and chests to repel moths and other insects due to its aromatic and distinct scent.
WORKING PROPERTIES: It is known for its excellent working properties and its ability to take a smooth, satiny finish with sharp tools. It is relatively easy to work, with good machining qualities.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: Fairly lightweight, moderately soft and low in strength.
AVAILABILITY: Predominately found in 4/4 thickness.
MAIN USES: Cedar chests, closet linings, siding, fence posts.
